Everyday People
Interpretation by C. Goff III
This recording is a not-for-profit tribute to Sly Stone's brilliant composition from 1968. No rights are claimed to the original music or lyrics written by Sylvester Stone, nor to the original recording performed by Sly & The Family Stone.
Today in 2024, the people of the United States have achieved a state of animosity towards one another that is exhibited, encouraged, and exaggerated throughout all forms of human communication. Television conglomerates, internet podcasters, radio talk show hosts, smart phone manufacturers, software developers, etc. are all realizing the profit potentials of selling accusations and innuendos to an audience that possesses what appears to be the shortest attention span in human history. As America says "goodbye" to the first quarter of the 21st Century, words such as "truth" and "trust" and "tolerance" have lost much of what they once meant.
As is the situation today, the Americans of 1968 were divided by customs, cultures, and color. Inequalities between various groups fueled violence and protest. One major difference between then and now, however, was that technology had not yet advanced far enough in the 1960s to become the ubiquitous slave driver of every American's life that it is today. "Everyday People" chanted a pop music mantra that called for Sly's 1960s contemporaries to take the challenge of getting along with one another into their own hands -- for human beings to admit their own shortcomings and to avoid projecting their personal prejudices and bad habits onto their fellows. While, during the late 1960s, the song did not have the potential of getting as much attention as it might today, it did amass enough attention to become a number one radio hit.
Today's intrusive communications technologies do not only affect residents of the United States, of course. A small number of people all over the world are now profiting from the promulgation of lies and hatred, in ways that they never could have dreamed of in days gone by. Those who control real "power" in today's world (heads of corporations, politicians, military leaders) are reaping big rewards from their divisive activities, and they seem intent on continuing this plundering, no matter how much damage they do in the process.
I chose to resuscitate "Everyday People" at this time to honor and repeat the message that Sly Stone brought to the world fifty-six years ago: "We Got To Live Together."
